The City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department, under the Sports & Recreation Unit, is offering a fantastic short-term contract opportunity for Seasonal Lifeguards. If you’re passionate about public safety, swimming, and working with the community, this is your chance to make a real impact!
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for Seasonal lifeguard position, applicants must have:
- Grade 10 or 12 school certificate
- A valid Lifeguard Award (expired retests will be considered if completed within two months of appointment)
- A valid First Aid certificate
- 3–6 months’ lifeguard experience
- Physically and mentally fit
- Willingness to undergo all relevant vetting processes
Key Responsibilities
As a Seasonal Lifeguard, your duties will include:
- Performing rescues and administering First Aid
- Supervising bathers and ensuring compliance with pool safety regulations
- Coordinating public services and maintaining safety and hygiene standards
- Operating and checking filtration systems and conducting chemical testing
- Assisting with “learn to swim” programmes and supporting instructors
- Enforcing the Swimming Pool By-Laws and Occupational Health & Safety Act
- Assisting with duties of the Superintendent when required
Competencies & Skills Seasonal Lifeguard
- Excellent lifesaving knowledge and pool safety awareness
- Good communication (written and verbal) and computer literacy
- High level of physical fitness
- Able to lift/carry equipment, use pool chemicals safely, and tolerate stressful environments
- Strong sense of accountability and teamwork
