About the Apprenticeship (Tractor and Earthmoving Mechanic Training)

  • Duration: 3-year contract (maximum 4 years)
  • Qualification: Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic
  • Probation Period: First 6 months
  • Training Includes:
    • Practical Training Institute (phased learning)
    • N-subjects (distance learning & Saturday classes if required)
    • John Deere Training Facility (Boksburg)
    • Internal AFGRI specialist training
    • Product training with various suppliers

Training costs are covered by AFGRI (if passed). Any failed modules must be repeated at your own expense. Apprentices are required to “work back” the time spent qualifying.

Key Responsibilities

As an AFGRI Apprentice, you will:

  • Train to become a qualified Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic
  • Conduct equipment repairs and maintenance
  • Assist with stock control
  • Deliver excellent customer service
  • Perform general workplace duties

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Strong communication and admin skills
  • Computer literacy
  • N2 subjects required:
    • Mathematics
    • Engineering Science
    • Diesel Trade Theory
    • Plus one of: Industrial Electronics, Engineering Drawing, or Motor Trade Theory

If you do not have N2, a Matric with relevant technical subjects (minimum 40%) will be considered. Subjects include:

  • Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy)
  • Technical Mathematics
  • Physical Science / Technical Science
  • Engineering Graphics and Design

Applicants without N2 can complete the subjects through Further Education and Training sponsored by AFGRI.
