Job Overview (Apprentice Fitter and Turner)

Weir Minerals is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated Apprentice Fitter and Turner to join its Isando plant in Johannesburg. The successful candidate will undergo a 3–4-year structured apprenticeship programme, gaining hands-on experience in machining, assembly, and maintenance of mechanical components.

This role is ideal for individuals passionate about mechanical engineering and seeking to qualify as a Fitter & Turner tradesperson.

Key Responsibilities

Technical and Operational Tasks

• Learn to machine, assemble, and maintain mechanical components using precision tools.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, symbols, and tolerances.
• Operate manual machines (lathes, milling, and drilling machines).
• Perform turning, facing, threading, boring, and tapering operations on metals and alloys.
• Conduct hydraulic and pneumatic fittings, shaft alignments, and mechanical assemblies.
• Use measuring instruments, micrometers, verniers, gauges, and more.
• Complete the apprenticeship programme in line with company and SETA requirements.

Safety and Process Optimization

• Demonstrate full commitment to Weir’s Zero Harm safety culture.
• Support continuous improvement of plant operations and systems.
• Comply with all company safety and Duty of Care policies.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

• Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science.
• N2 or higher in Mechanical Engineering (Fitting & Turning).
• N5/N6 qualification in Engineering will be advantageous.

Skills and Attributes:

• Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
• Ability to read technical drawings accurately.
• Commitment to safety and learning.
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
