This structured, 3-year programme offers aspiring Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanics the chance to gain practical experience, formal training, and industry-recognised qualifications — all while earning.

Whether you’re a recent Matriculant or already have your N2 Engineering qualification, this apprenticeship is your gateway into South Africa’s mechanical and agricultural equipment industries.

What You’ll Gain

    • Tractor Mechanic
    • OR Earthmoving Mechanic

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Train to become a qualified Tractor or Earthmoving Technician
  • Conduct repairs and maintenance on agricultural/mechanical equipment
  • Assist in stock control and workshop logistics
  • Deliver high-quality customer service
  • Perform general technical and administrative tasks as needed

Minimum Requirements for Apprenticeship Programme

Applicants must meet the following:

Education:

Option 1: N2 Certificate with the following subjects:

  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Diesel Trade Theory
    AND one of:
  • Industrial Electronics
  • Motor Trade Theory
  • Engineering/Technical Drawing

OR

Option 2: Matric Certificate with:

  • Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) – min 40% / E-symbol
  • Physical Science – min 40% / E-symbol
  • Engineering Graphics and Design, Technical Mathematics, or Technical Science – min 40%

Apprenticeship Programme Applicants without N2 may be considered if they meet the above Matric criteria. AFGRI may sponsor N2 studies for selected candidates.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s Licence
  • Basic Computer Literacy
  • Strong administrative and communication skills

Important Information about the Apprenticeship Programme

  • First 6 months = Probation Period: Either party may terminate without obligation
  • Full contract term = 3 years, maximum duration is 4 years
  • Work-back period applies upon qualification (costs may be incurred if breached)
  • Learners must attend:
    • Saturday classes (as needed)
    • Practical, theory, and internal training sessions
  • Assessment questions will be sent to shortlisted candidates by email
  • Only candidates who pass screening and assessments will be contacted
  • EE candidates encouraged to apply in line with AFGRI’s Employment Equity Policy
