Are you a recent Matriculant looking to kickstart your career in the mechanical field? AFGRI is offering a structured apprenticeship in South Africa that leads to qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic.
This opportunity is only open to Matriculants for the current intake. Another intake (open to all applicants) will be advertised in August and September.
About the AFGRI Apprenticeship
This 3-year in-service training program provides hands-on mechanical experience, theoretical knowledge, and specialized product training. Here’s what to expect:
- 6-month probation period to assess fit for the role
- Formal apprenticeship contract upon successful probation
- Practical training at a specialized institute (if required)
- Distance learning for N subjects (if needed & available)
- Product-specific training from John Deere, other key suppliers, and AFGRI internal experts
Note: Apprentices who fail a training phase must redo it at their own cost and time.
AFGRI Apprenticeship Duties
During the apprenticeship, you will:
- Train to become a Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic
- Perform equipment repair and maintenance
- Manage stock control
- Provide excellent customer service
- Assist with general workshop tasks
Minimum Requirements
You must have:
- A valid driver’s license
- Good communication and admin skills
- Computer literacy
Academic Requirements:
Either:
- N2 with the following subjects:
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- Plus one of:
- Industrial Electronics
- Technical Drawing / Engineering Drawing
- Motor Trade Theory
OR
- Matric with any of the following (Passed):
- Mathematics (Not Mathematical Literacy)
- Technical Mathematics
- Physical Science
- Technical Science
- Engineering Graphics and Design
If you don’t yet have the required N2, AFGRI will support further education to meet these standards.

Important: This apprenticeship is subject to a 3-year contractual agreement. If an apprentice exits early, they may be liable for training costs and time worked will be prorated.
